What is your current role/title and provide a brief job description?
I am the Director of Marketing and Engagement at modus studio, an architectural design and fabrication collective of 30 brilliant and talented individuals located in Fayetteville, Arkansas. As a marketing team of one, I wear many hats. I primarily focus on developing brand strategies, building proposals, leading interoffice and community engagement, and promoting modus studio's work across numerous markets.
What inspired you to join SMPS, and how long have you been a member?
I was a lurker, skeptically watching SMPS from afar for several years. Being the only marketing person at my company, I sometimes felt like I was in a bubble, like some sort of outsider. I wanted to know how other people conquered the challenges of the job, and as a lifelong learner, I wanted to continue to make sure that I was not falling behind. Somewhere along the way, I met Lindsay Young (nu marketing), who one day over coffee insisted that SMPS was exactly where I should be. I joined just over two years ago, but the knowledge and community I've gained in that short amount of time has been invaluable.
What led you to the AEC industry and what do you like about it?
My path into marketing has not been a traditional one, but my beginnings in architecture were fairly straightforward. I have a bachelor of architecture degree from the University of Arkansas. I've had a few traditional project management roles, most notably when I began working at modus studio, joining just months after its creation. I spent the first five years here as a designer and project manager, and for the last nine years, I have been in my marketing role. I enjoy being surrounded by creativity and seeing the impact good design can have on a community. The intersection of ideological and practical processes of architecture is my ideal environment.
What valuable information have you gained from participating in SMPS?
Through workshops, seminars, conferences, networking, and online resources, I have digested so much information in only a few years. The most notable advantage SMPS has given me is the knowledge and confidence to work on strategic plans, helping our still fairly young business develop goals and tactics for growth.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
My dad once told me to remember that every person I've ever met is probably going through something, and they will all experience tragic loss at different points in their lives. It's important to be kind.
What is your favorite pastime or hobby?
So. Many. Hobbies. It's difficult to pick a favorite, but I'll go with two of my current obsessions: Bouldering and creating music. That said, my favorite way to spend time is with my wife and twin daughters.
What is your favorite book?
Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain. It's a reminder of my roots working in restaurant kitchens and the idea that you can find community almost anywhere.
